"Gallipoli from Above: The Untold Story" demolishes the myths about poor planning, wrong beaches and British generals sending the Anzacs to certain death. It is the true story of how a team of Australian officers used aerial intelligence, emerging technology and innovative tactics to plan the landing at Anzac Cove. While there has been much focus on the battle for Gallipoli, little attention has been paid to the planning that preceded it. The landing was one of the most complex and daunting operations in the history of warfare and the risks associated with it were enormous. The Turks knew the attack was coming and had plenty of time to prepare. "Gallipoli From Above" is a 54-minute documentary that follows the Australian officers who planned the landing at Anzac Cove and the air-crews whose flimsy flying machines brought back the much needed information upon which those plans were based. Generals William Throsby Bridges and Colonel Brudenell White were charged with the difficult task of landing 20,000 ANZAC troops on a heavily defended and precipitous shoreline. They used an aircraft carrier, a tethered balloon and a squadron of biplanes to gather detailed information on the disposition of the Turkish defenders and developed a plan for the landing that avoided significant casualties. It is now nearly 100 years since the landing and hundreds of books, movies and documentaries have failed to grasp the significance of the ANZAC achievement. Instead, the mythology has clouded the real story of how these two influential Australian officers took control of the landing using every innovation they could muster to safely land their men on Z Beach. Unlike the British the Anzac's decided on a night-time surprise attack. As a result, the Australians came ashore with only minor casualties. By contrast, the English officers in charge of the Cape Helles landing ignored the aerial intelligence and approached the shore daylight after an ineffective bombardment. Their men paid a terrible price. "Gallipoli From Above" will rewrite the Gallipoli story by showing how the myth of bronzed ANZACs and blundering Brits has failed to do justice to the skills and innovation of the Australian leadership. This was the first chapter in the story of the Australian Army's achievements in World War I, achievements that would give Australia confidence in itself, and the world confidence in Australia.
