The life and times of Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, the great Spanish painter, from his childhood in Fuendetodos, a small Aragonese town, until his final departure into exile in Bordeaux served as the base material for this memorable 6-episode miniseries. Appropriately produced by TVE and filmed on historical location, it is a spectacle of interest not just for art lovers or Goya connoisseurs but for anyone into well-crafted drama. A painter who begun himself a revolution of proportions, Goya was a witness of the Napoleonic wars and of a nation in arms resisting the aggression with undismayed heart and soul. He was that ancient paradox of the artist: an extremely sensitive individual who also was a bullfighting aficionado. He was a womanizer in his own aesthetic and impassioned way; he was friends with kings and poets, and a victim of social and political prejudices. He was an exhaustively troubled man: deaf, neurotic, literally mad. Goya was no saint and his richly contrasted self is what makes him a great subject for a television series. Each of the six chapters of the series deals with a definite and singular stage in the painter's career and also with the society of his time. Goya lived through a time of profound changes that had its two milestones in the French Revolution and in the Napoleonic wars. Goya knew the glory and lived closely the power of the Court, but he also knew fear, the interrogations of the Inquisition, jealousy and disappointment. This series is a honestly portrait of him and makes a valuable statement on the origins of his essential oeuvre. The first episode covers Goya's childhood until his confrontation with the Cabildo del Pilar de Zaragoza ("The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar") on the occasion of the mural painting of the "Regina Martyrum" vault. The painter Francisco de Goya began his career in the Luzan and Bayeu workshops on his rise to the court of Madrid. It is a time of slow learning that includes Goya's trip to Italy, his failure in the nomination for awards of the Royal Academy of San Fernando, his first commissions and his activity in the creation of cartoons for tapestries. We also attend his first contact with the Court of Charles III.

Goya ascends socially as a portraitist, who end up fighting the nobility and the nascent bourgeoisie, reaching the position of Painter of the King's Court. During this period, Goya made contact with the best minds of Spain of his time, the "enlightened", whose company provides him with a broad horizon of intellectual wealth that the artist do not miss. Goya comes into contact with the Dukes of Osuna and through them he meets the Duchess of Alba. The episode ends with his serious and mysterious illness of 1792 that causes him to become deaf.

Goya travels to Andalusia to the palace of the Duchess of Alba to paint. The Duchess of Alba was for Goya the object of a loving dedication which eventually culminated his rise from simple craftsman to Court artist. On the other hand, for the Duchess, Goya was no more than a simple generous and frivolous entertainment. These differences in attitude of both characters made the relationship dissolve in a particularly dramatic way for Goya. Meanwhile, the scene of Spanish life, which the painter closely follows, descends to darkness. Back in Madrid, his work with engravings can bring him problems.

[edit] The Family of Charles IV (La familia de Carlos IV)

Goya is a witness at the beginning of the 19th century to the palace intrigues of Spain and the entry of Napoleon's invaders and the uprising of the people of Madrid starting the war. This episode presents the splendid portrait of "La familia de Carlos IV." Goya's art is more and more deep and dense, but the memories and nostalgia begin to intensify. In these years, the Duchess, his great love, and Zapater, his best friend, die. The dramatic incidents in which the Royal Family is involved highlight the deep crisis that is being experienced in the country that, inexorably, is rushing towards the War of Independence.

[edit] "I Saw It..." ("Yo Lo Vi...")

During the six years of war against the French invaders of Spain, Goya traveled through Zaragoza and Madrid observing the ravages of war and death everywhere. We witness Goya's internal drama, torn between his fervent patriotism and his sympathy for the ideas of the Revolution, in a country suffering from violent French occupation. Goya captures this chaos in "The Disasters of War" and in his paintings of May 2nd and 3rd, in which the people of Madrid suffered French repression. At the end of the conflict, he must still pass the "purification" trial of King Ferdinand VII and another of the Inquisition for his painting of "La Maja Naked".

[edit] The Deaf Man's Manor (La Quinta del Sordo)

In the last years of his life, Goya is increasingly disillusioned with the evolution of politics and the humanity. Goya retires to his house of Quinta del Sordo, where he suffers his last major health crisis, leading him, after his recovery, to reflect in detail his longtime obsessions and his jaded vision of the world in "Black paintings". Spain is closed to his art and country became more hostile after the harsh repression that followed the liberal triennium from 1820 to 1823. Finally, circumstances forced him to leave his private paradise of Quinta del Sordo and his homeland.

The first feature is episode "Francisco de Goya", interpreted by Javier Loyola and Francisco Merino and directed by Enilio Martinez-Lazaro, broadcast on TVE on January 3, 1977, as part of the series "Paisajes con figuras (Landscapes with figures)", written by Antonio Gala. Second feature is "Goya o la impaciencia (Goya or impatience)" was broadcast by TVE on July 10, 1974 as part of the series "Los pintores del Prado (The painters of the Prado)".
