[edit] Information
Professor Alice Roberts takes a train journey across the world's oldest and greatest civilisation, starting at the very end of the Ancient Egyptian empire in Alexandria, before heading south to Cairo, Luxor and Aswan.
[edit] Chapter 1: Alexandria
Alice goes deep underground in search of Cleopatra, discovers how the Romans and the Greeks reacted to the treasures of Ancient Egypt and, on a visit to the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, she learns how a slave became a sultan and built his own fairy-tale castle.
[edit] Chapter 2: The Pyramids
Alice arrives in Cairo and follows in the footsteps of Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Edwards. The journey takes her to the Great Pyramids, where she is allowed to climb deep inside to see the tomb and sarcophagus of the pharaoh Khufu. In Saqqara she learns how and why the pyramids came about, and even finds time for a spot of shopping in a Cairo souk.
[edit] Chapter 3: Luxor
Having seen the treasures of Tutankhamun in a Cairo Museum, Alice takes the train to Luxor to see his tomb and his mummified body in the Valley of the Kings. She also takes a walk along the Avenue of the Sphinxes and catches up with an old friend who's using satellite technology to find hundreds of previously undiscovered burial sites.
[edit] Chapter 4: The Temples
Alice ends her adventure in Aswan, whose quarries provided the granite for the country's vast collection of Ancient Egyptian monuments. She then takes a boat to see the extraordinary Philae Temple.
