Cruel Camera 1982
On May 5, 1982, the investigative series broadcast a landmark story titled "Cruel Camera." In this piece, reporter Bob McKeown unleashed some devastating truths about the mistreatment and outright cruelty animals suffered while "working" in showbiz. You may be familiar with a few notorious examples from the early-to-mid 20th century: the nearly 100 horses that were killed during the climactic chariot race in Ben-Hur; the horse that perished after a stuntman rode it over a 70-foot cliff in Jesse James; the lion that was stabbed to death in Tarzan, etc.
Cruel Camera 2008
As long as they've made movies, animals have been killed or injured to do it. In a landmark investigation over 25 years ago,The Fifth Estate's Bob McKeown uncovered an uncomfortable, even shocking, reality about moviemaking – animals, intentionally put in harm's way, abused, often killed to create the kind of cinematic excitement that draws a crowd.
As well,The Fifth Estate found that in wildlife documentaries, the casualty is often the truth. Nature films, including documentaries made by esteemed studios such as Disney, sometimes used fakery in their shots. In 2008, The Fifth Estatethought it was time for McKeown to take another look through theCruelCamerato see how things have changed. His findings show that although the TV and movie business has made adjustments, many of the damning findings of the original investigation haven't changed much at all.
This update includes interview with animal trainers, actors, representatives of the American Humane Association, the Los Angeles County prosecutor, venerable wildlife filmmaker Sir David Attenborough and primatologist Carol Noon.
