Wild Australia with Ray Mears Series 1 In Wild Australia, Ray Mears delves into the spectacularly diverse Australian landscape to look at some of the weird and wonderful life forms that are able to live and survive in the land Down Under. From the expansive waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the vast wilderness of Arnhem Land, to the teeming Cooper Creek billabongs and the ancient heartland of the rainforest, each episode sees Mears explore the dramatic physical geography of the region, the extreme weather conditions that occur there and the wildlife species that have adapted to survive in those environments.
[edit] Reef
He begins by exploring the Great Barrier, taking a boat out to Hervey Bay off the coast of Queensland with whale expert Wally Franklin, where they observe humpback whales on their way to the feeding grounds in Antarctica. Ray then heads to Lady Elliot Island, where he goes scuba diving on the coral reef in the hope of spotting manta rays.
[edit] Wetlands
Ray explores the country's wetlands by travelling to Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, one of the most remote regions of Australia, where he comes face to face with a giant saltwater crocodile and witnesses the ancient tradition of farming with fire.
[edit] Bush
Ray explores the Bush in the state of Victoria and tracks down two Australian icons - the kangaroo and the koala. He also canoes across a secret lake in search of the elusive duck-billed platypus, one of the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth.
[edit] Rainforest
Ray continues to explore the country's wildlife, weather and geography by travelling deep into the rainforest as he attempts to track down cassowaries and tree kangaroos, two of Australia's most elusive creatures.
[edit] Coast
Ray continues to explore the country's wildlife, weather and geography by travelling along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, taking to the seas off the coast in search of species like the weedy sea dragon and encountering dolphins, penguins and fur seals.
