[edit] Information
Worst Place to be a Pilot is the visually jaw-dropping new series that follows the highs and lows in the lives of the young British pilots who work for Indonesian airline Susi Air, as they fly and land their planes in some of the most breath-taking, remote and dangerous locations on earth. For pilots facing limited job opportunities, Susi Air offers a lifeline and will take on pilots who have as little as 250 hours flying time under their belts and who want to clock up more hours to land a job with airlines back home. The pilots have to fly in the testing outer regions of Indonesia, where the weather is unpredictable and often runways are cut into the side of mountains and separated by miles of dense jungle. These factors are known to cause deadly flying conditions - Susi Air has suffered three fatal crashes in the last three years and there have been 128 crashes in Indonesia in the last 20 years; making it one of the most dangerous places to fly in the world.
Produced by Firecracker Films.
[edit] Flying in the Face of Danger
The new recruits come face to face with the remarkable range of challenges that flying in Indonesia presents. Captain George is greeted by a large group of tribespeople as he becomes the first pilot to land on a runway that's taken them 14 years to cut into the side of a mountain. Guy takes drastic action as a passenger has a mid-air panic attack, and Sam lands a plane at a remote and spectacular runway.
[edit] A Long Way from Home
Captain Sam Quinn finds himself in the middle of a dispute as he delivers much needed supplies to remote Papuan tribespeople. When bows and arrows are drawn, he makes a swift exit. Back at base he comes down with malaria, a disease which could end his flying career. Captain Guy Richardson is treated like a visiting dignitary at the opening of a remote island runway. And will new recruit Nick Holmes pass an assessment to decide if he's finally allowed to get behind the controls of a plane?
[edit] Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Captain Matt Dearden battles severe turbulence to deliver local tribespeople to their loved ones, before becoming the first Westerner to be invited to one of their homes. Captain Dave Burns finds himself sandwiched between an approaching storm and an active volcano as he negotiates his way back to base. Without the advanced technology the big jet airliners enjoy, he is forced to navigate his way through the clouds by sight, literally keeping an eye out for any other planes in the vicinity. Back on the ground he is called for a meeting with fearsome airline boss Susi that could have a massive impact on his future, but he is left waiting to find out the outcome. New recruit Nick Holmes faces his final test flight. Pass - and he will be flying passengers for real. Fail - and he'll be heading home.
[edit] Long Flight Home
Deep in the mountainous heartland of Papua, solo Captain Matt Dearden finds the strip enveloped in mist making it incredibly tricky to pick a route through the valley. On landing he has to deal with an argument on the runway between local tribes people before finding himself caught in the middle of an election dispute that threatens to turn in to a mass rock fight. Captain Danie Malan is put to the test as he tries to graduate to the trickiest mountain strips in Indonesia. His tutor, Captain Steve Walton instructs him to abort his landing at the last moment, fearing they're about to misjudge the landing. Captain Robin Rudderham is also looking to make the move up and experiences the threats that come with flying the busiest route in Papua - the super highway. With planes flying dangerously close to one another - often with no radar to warn them of their position - pilots have to remain on red alert for the threat of a mid-air collision.
